This Week s Wow: What Is the Meaning Behind Barneys s Hypnotic (& Creepy) Window Display?

This Week s Wow: Dries Van Noten In this weekly feature, InStyle’s Fashion News Director Eric Wilson shares his favorite fashion moment of the week, and explains how it could shape styles to come. Look for it on What’s Right Now every Friday.
The Moment: They are not quite on the scale of the phenomenal Dries Van Noten Inspirations exhibition that opened at Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris this month, but the latest windows of Barneys New York on Madison Avenue gave New Yorkers at least a sense of the Belgian designer s creative process. While the Paris exhibition is most impressive for visually demonstrating how a disparate range of ideas, eras, artworks, images, and films can take shape in the design of a single garment, the Barneys windows are more abstract. Each display shows two Van Noten outfits from recent years (Barneys has been carrying his collections for nearly 30 years), next to short films by the artist Andrew Zuckerman (pictured on the right next to Van Noten, below) that show butterflies, birds, and flowers in motion. It’s hypnotizing, if not a little creepy, to see, from the sidewalk, Van Noten s exotically printed sportswear flanking a video of an amber-eyed owl in flight.
This Week s Wow: Dries Van Noten2 Barneys hosted a series of events this week to celebrate the designer and the success of the Paris exhibition, which has helped expand an appreciation of Van Noten beyond his well-known interests in India, flowers, and color. His ideas, it turns out, are equally influenced by punk rock, movies and music, art history from the Renaissance through the present and more. When the museum first approached him, Van Noten says, the last thing he wanted was a retrospective.
I wanted it to be about inspiration, but to really show the way I am thinking, how I work and how I make associations, he says. That’s how the whole thing started.
Why It’s a Wow: Van Noten and Pamela Golbin, the curator, plan to bring the show to Antwerp in the fall, and possibly later to the United States, but the pieces and subjects included will likely change at each venue. (Curatorial standards require some vintage fashions to rest for several years each time after they are displayed.)
Barneys also introduced a limited edition version of a book of his designs related to the exhibition, this one including a second volume of bonus images from his archives and a fancy black cloth cover. (The original version is $90; the special edition costs $275.) If you can’t get to the show, it’s a wonderful place to start to gain a better understanding of one of fashion’s most cerebral designers.
Learn More: Visit the online home of the Dries Van Noten Inspirations exhibition and plan your Paris vacation accordingly. The designer also hosts a short video about the show and his work here.

Pretty Little Liars Tonight: Why Shay Mitchell Is Loving This Season

Pretty Little Liars Shay Mitchell Rejoice, Pretty Little Liars fans—it s Tuesday, which means there s a fresh episode of our favorite (and most stylish) teen mystery on tonight! Last week, one of the Liars found out that someone very close to her was a member of the A Team (gasp!). This week, the girls are banding together to help her cope—Shay Mitchell s Emily included. I think in the beginning, Emily was looked at as the weakest link, and now she s showing that she s not, and she s not the one to mess with either, Mitchell told InStyle.com at the Nanette Lepore for jcp L Amour launch party in New York. Why else is she loving season 3? The second half of the season is really about one of the girls breaking down a little more than the others. It s going to be interesting to see her character in a downward spiral after knowing her for the past seasons. Oh, no! Any guesses, ladies? Tune in to ABC Family at 8/7c to find out!

Exclusive! Dancing with the Stars’ Karina Smirnoff Talks Last Night’s Burlesque-Inspired Costume

On last night’s Dancing with the Stars, Karina Smirnoff and Corbin Bleu performed an Argentinian Tango to “Welcome to Burlesque,” a sexy violin-driven ballad. The partners were definitely under added pressure—Cher served as guest judge this week, and also performed mega-hit “Believe” and “I Hope You Find It” on the show.
For their attire, Bleu and Smirnoff incorporated modern detailing to fit the burlesque theme. Bleu was clad in black pants and a white button-down shirt. Smirnoff took to a fitted, midnight blue body suit with nude paneling, sheer thigh-highs, and black lace-up booties for their dance. “I wanted to pay homage to the feel of the song,” Smirnoff told InStyle.com exclusively. “It s a modern Moulin Rouge take on the Tango.”
Cher called the duo’s performance “amazing” and compared it to a film she had seen in the past. “…It was about Tango, and it was beautiful—just like your dance.”
The team earned a 27/30, the second highest score of the night, right behind Amber Riley and Derek Hough. Surprisingly, Brant Daugherty and Peta Murgatroyd were eliminated this week, leaving six couples in the ballroom.
Tune in next Monday night at 8/7c on ABC for the live results show.

Inside the Party: Calvin Klein Supports Marriage Equality with Uma Thurman, Neil Patrick Harris, and More

Calvin Klein HRC Cocktail Party See All Photos Like the Calvin Klein aesthetic, even the brand’s cocktail parties are streamlined and elegant—the brand along with the Human Rights Campaign, co-hosted a chic soiree to celebrate the advocacy group’s two-year-old Americans for Marriage Equality program at its Madison Avenue flagship store last night, and many loyal celebrity CK fans stopped by to show their support. “Tonight they lured me upon the issue of marriage equality,” said Uma Thurman, who showed up with daughter Maya Thurman-Hawke. “To me, it’s an absolute no brainer. Hopefully, it will be alleviated soon and everyone will be allowed to marry and divorce equally!” Neil Patrick Harris and his partner David Burtka, Andy Cohen, Dan Stevens, and more swung through, grabbed a Champagne flute and a rainbow-hued macaron, and toasted to the cause with Calvin Klein’s creative directors, Francisco Costa (womenswear) and Italo Zucchelli (menswear). “The company has taken upon this cause, and it’s really important to us,” said Costa, shown above with Thurman. “It makes us feel proud.” Go pride! To learn more about the campaign, head over to hrc.org.

Quvenzhané Wallis’s Red Carpet Staple = Puppy Purses! Here’s Why

Quvenzhane Wallis Beasts of the Southern Wild’s pint-size Quvenzhané Wallis is getting the superstar treatment in the fashion world—just yesterday she wore a Stella McCartney dress to the Film Independent Spirit Awards, where she was nominated for Best Female Lead. And while the designer duds keep flowing in, there’s one red carpet mainstay that remains—her puppy purse. “I brought one to Utah [for the Sundance Film Festival], and that was the first one I ever brought everywhere,” the nine-year-old told InStyle.com. “Now I’ve started to collect them.” And Benh Zeitlin, the director of the film, loves the animal-friendly statement. “It makes a lot of sense because the first thing she ever told us at the auditions was a story about her dog,” he said. “I like that she’s staying true to herself.” So, does this mean we’ll see one on the Oscars red carpet? “Maybe!” she hinted. It would be an accessory to remember!
